Angiogenesis

Angiogenesis (angio’gen’esis) — the growth of new blood vessels — is an important natural process occurring in the body, both in health and in disease.

Angiogenesis occurs in the healthy body for healing wounds and for restoring blood flow to tissues after injury or insult. In females, angiogenesis also occurs during the monthly reproductive cycle (to rebuild the uterus lining, to mature the egg during ovulation) and during pregnancy (to build the placenta, the circulation between mother and fetus).

Angiogenesis Inhibitor

An angiogenesis inhibitor is a substance that inhibits the growth of new blood vessels (angiogenesis). Some angiogenesis inhibitors are a normal part of the body’s control, some are administered as drugs, and some come from diet.

We all know eating well is important for health. Now we know that how we eat can impact on angiogenesis. Many foods contain naturally occurring inhibitors of angiogenesis. When these foods are consumed and absorbed into the bloodstream, the inhibitors act to boost the body’s existing system that suppresses undesirable angiogenesis that can promote or accompany disease.

What to avoid…

  • No consuming – Aspirin, Advil, Motrin, Aleve, Ibuprofen, Antihistamines, Decongestants. (Tylenol can be taken. Excedrine Migraine ‘Aspirin Free’ is fine.) Note: The ‘regular’ type of excedrine migraine contains aspirin & caffeine therefore, it isn’t good for us.
  • No heavy lifting or strenuous exercising. (No lifting over 20 lbs.)
  • Not a lot of sugar, salt, cheese or fried/fatty foods.
  • Don’t overexert yourself (rest when tired, the body heals and repairs itself during rest.)
  • Extreme emotions whether happy, sad, mad, angry or excited, can increase blood pressure.
  • Avoid stress.
  • Avoid oestrogen & hormone replacement therapy (HRT).

The good stuff!

  • Consume fish (not fried – or ‘fish sandwiches’). Salmon, cod & tuna are great.
  • Eat lots of fruits and vegetables – Blueberries, blackberries, bananas including dark green leafy vegetables
  • Note – Some of the most healthy foods are natural blood thinners, such as vinegar, ginger, Omega-3 fatty foods, blueberries, raisins, cinnamon – and must be countered with foods rich in vitamin K – such as broccoli, Romaine lettuce, mustard greens, collard greens, spinach, parsley, kale, green leaf lettuce, endive lettuce, Iceburg lettuce, swiss chard, turnip greens, seaweed, beet greens, brussell sprouts, cauliflower, asparagus, liver & green tea.
  • Green tea
  • White tea – ‘Black tea’ has good benefits as well, however, green tea & white tea are the most beneficial.
  • Walnuts
  • Almonds
  • Limit alcohol and caffeine consumption (including the ‘hidden’ amounts in products).
